I am a partner in the intellectual property group at Borden Ladner Gervais, a leading full-service Canadian national law firm. Working in BLG's Ottawa office, I specialize in securing patent protection in Canada, the United States and worldwide for inventions and designs in the electrical and mechanical engineering, high-tech and cleantech areas.

I work with companies and inventors to protect their R&D investment by obtaining, assessing and/or enforcing patent protection.

With over 12 years of experience, including 3 years as a Senior Canadian Patent Examiner, I work with CEOs, corporate counsel, inventors and managers and advise on IP strategy that is in line with clients' business strategies.

I provide strategic advice on portfolio management, and draft and prosecute patent and industrial design applications in Canada, the United States, and internationally. I also provide IP audits and advise on patentability, infringement and validity.

I graduated with honours with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, with a double specialization in communications and microwaves. After working for a local engineering consulting firm, I joined the patent examination staff of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).

At CIPO, I examined patent applications relating to emerging Internet and wireless technologies, data switching networks, fiber optic networks, and related protocols, architectures, software and hardware. As a Senior Patent Examiner, I trained junior examiners in patent examination procedures, practices and techniques and made innovative contributions to both policy and resource projects in the Patent Branch.

As a partner at Borden Ladner Gervais, I work diligently on behalf of clients in securing patent protection for their inventions, utilizing my knowledge of current developments in Canadian, United States and worldwide patent practice and my experience with the evolving trends in the patenting of emerging technologies. I am a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.  I became a registered Canadian patent agent in 2002, and a registered United States patent agent in 2003.

I am fluently bilingual (English and French) and can communicate in Arabic. I am a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), l’Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle (AIPPI), and Christian Legal Fellowship (CLF).
